Vehicle characteristics
body
Elantra’s “Korean blood” is clearly exposed from the appearance. The whole body looks gentle and elegant, but the redesigned front is very aggressive, and the two thick edges on the hood extend forward to the small but prominent water tank grille, with a strong forward feel. The redesigned wedge-shaped headlights are sportier and more aggressive than the Sonata’s peanut-like shape, and even have what the retrofitting world calls a “fog blackhead” effect that looks much like the modified version, but the tank grille squeezed by the headlights is too stingy. The tail polyhedron is shaped a bit like Buick’s Excelle (Daewoo’s new nubira, of course), is it because Koreans have similar aesthetic standards? Or is it because Korean companies prefer Italian designs? I don’t know.
trim
The interior lines of the Elantra are relatively simple, the beige color match is very fresh, and the matte metal trim plate on the center console and the door inner armrest is also matched, which is very fashionable. The plastic parts of the instrument table have a decent texture, and they do not give people a particularly cheap feeling. Of course, if there are fine faults, there are individual places of assembly quality is not good. But in general, there is no difference between the craftsmanship and quality of some domestic European or Japanese cars.
The length, width and height of the Elantra are 4495MM, 1720mm and 1425mm respectively, and its wheelbase reaches 2610mm, which is quite prominent in the same class of cars, and its interior space is also the level of the same class of cars. The interior width is very prominent, and the front and rear seat legroom and head room are also very generous. Only the head space of the rear middle seat is too small, and it is easy to head. The reason for this is that a retractable cup holder is set under the rear middle seat, which is actually better placed inside the rear center armrest.
engine
The Beijing Hyundai Elantra series has two models with 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter engines. The 1.6l model is equipped with an in-line 4-cylinder dual overhead camshaft, 16-valve engine. In actual driving, the power of the car seems to be unsatisfactory, making it difficult for people to get the driving feeling that matches it. There have been such complaints: even if the accelerator is pressed to the bottom, the engine growls, the speedometer is still slowly climbing.
The Elantra, with its 1.8-DOHC engine, fared much better. It has a displacement of 1.795l, a maximum power of 96kw/6000rpm, and delivers the highest fuel efficiency while delivering 162nm/4500rpm of torque at 4500 RPM. In the actual test, the 1.8l Elantra showed good high-speed stability, a gentle start, the acceleration process is relatively soft, and it can not show a strong sense of sports like its body shape, but the 12.3 seconds of 100 km acceleration is also understandable.
Base plate
The Elantra uses a front MacPherson, rear multi-link suspension system, and also has a pneumatic shock absorber, which is adjusted to be soft. Driving on the general road, the road vibration is filtered very clean, the cabin noise reduction is also done well, so the overall riding comfort can be comparable to a high level of medium-sized cars.
However, the soft suspension inevitably affects its handling performance. At high-speed corners, the suspension with excellent shock absorption effect has obviously become a burden at this time, bringing too much body roll, in addition to seriously damaging the driver’s confidence, but also really make its limit come ahead of time. In addition, the floppy suspension also caused the body to be inert, respond to the steering wheel’s action is delayed, it feels like controlling a larger car, and it is not easy to fix after a sideslip.
In terms of design trade-offs, it is possible that more models in this class will choose a neutral chassis adjustment, taking into account comfort and handling, and if it is a European car, it is more maneuverable. The Elantra is holding high the banner of comfort, which is obviously more suitable for the needs of the family.
